Peru welcomes the joint declaration adopted by leaders of the People's Republic of China, the French Republic, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States, who expressed their commitment to avoid confrontation involving nuclear weapons, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Thursday.

"Our country deems it appropriate that these nations, permanent members of the Security Council, ratify the commitment to their bilateral and multilateral obligations, particularly those established in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)," Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua indicated in a statement.

Said treaty includes continuing with negotiations in good faith to allow general and complete nuclear disarmament, under strict and effective international control, the ambassador indicated.

The chief of Peruvian diplomacy added that this declaration is consistent with the values defended by Peru, as well as the commitment to international peace and security that allows establishing an environment of political stability and trust-building —necessary to facilitate the development of countries and poverty eradication.

Within this framework, the diplomat commented that Peru on December 23 ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), which is the first agreement on a global scale that prohibits this type of weapons, as well as their delivery systems.

Its ultimate goal is to allow its complete destruction and elimination in a transparent, irreversible, and verifiable manner —within specific deadlines.
