Peru: VP Boluarte highlights role of social programs and Second Agrarian Reform

18:14 | Lima, Oct. 11.

The First Vice-President of the Republic and Development-Social Inclusion Minister Dina Boluarte has highlighted the role of social programs to face food insecurity, as well as the implementation of the Second Agrarian Reform to revalue family agriculture.

Boluarte's remarks were delivered during her participation at the 49th Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS).

The CFS is a United Nations Committee based at FAO's headquarters. Its Secretariat comprises the three Rome-based UN agencies: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Program (WFP).

"The Committee on World Food Security (CFS) plays a key role as a platform to work together in achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger; therefore, count on Peru to support this great effort to bridge the gap of hunger in the world," Boluarte said at the virtual session led by CFS Chairperson Thanawat Tiensin.

Peru's Vice-President explained that the Government —through social programs— meets the urgent needs to reverse the food insecurity situation on people in situation of poverty, vulnerability or gendered social risk.

In this regard, she highlighted the work of Qali Warma, which provides food services to boys and girls who attend public educational institutions at pre-school and primary levels across the country, and at secondary level in the Peruvian Amazon.

In addition, the government official underlined the work done by the Cooperation Fund for Social Development (Foncodes), which manages projects on productive development, as well as economic and social infrastructure, to contribute to food security of the most vulnerable families in rural areas of the highlands and the jungle of Peru.

She also mentioned the intervention of Zero Hunger to reduce gaps of food insecurity in a targeted, differentiated, and gradual manner for the benefit of urban and rural populations in situation of vulnerability because of the spread of COVID-19.
