U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) has docked at the port of Callao on a medical assistance mission to provide free surgeries and medical services to patients from Peru's Health Ministry-run (Minsa) hospitals.
The arrival took place on Monday morning within the framework of Brotherhood Operation —an institutional cooperation agreement between both countries.
During the visit, the
USNS Comfort medical team expects to perform (outpatient) surgeries aboard the ship.
To that end, the
Ministry of Health has selected more than 100 candidates from Cayetano Heredia, Sergio Bernales de Collique, Maria Auxiliadora, San Juan de Lurigancho, and Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz hospitals.
The surgical procedures will be conducted starting Wednesday, July 10.
The ship is equipped with modern facilities, operating and post-surgery rooms, two oxygen production plants, a blood bank, and a computed tomography (CT) unit.
The medical assistance mission will provide specialized services such as ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and wound care, among others.
Brotherhood Operation provides healthcare personnel from the
Peruvian Navy, the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, and Mexico, as well as top-level professionals from the Inca country's Health Ministry and Regional Health Directorate of Callao.
They are all prepared and focused on providing medical assistance and effective support to vulnerable populations.
The cooperation agreement between the Peruvian Navy and its
U.S. counterpart is backed by the Ministry of Defense and features the participation of Callao Regional Government, Callao Municipality, La Perla Municipality, and Peru's National Police.
