The Governments of Peru and the United States on Monday addressed the different cooperation programs implemented in the South American country for the fight against drugs, during a meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, the commitment of both countries in the fight against the world problem of illicit drugs was reaffirmed, in an environment of mutual trust as partners and allies against this global scourge.

Within the framework of this important meeting, a review was conducted of the bilateral relationship in the joint fight against illicit drug trafficking and of the joint actions to face this problem of global importance, as well as the effects and difficulties which have arisen in this matter over recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the subsequent work meeting with the Directors of Drug Control and of North America, the current situation of the eradication of illicit coca leaf crops was examined —especially in the VRAEM (Valley of Apurimac, Mantaro and Ene Rivers) area— as were the evolution and progress of joint projects linked to the Comprehensive and Sustainable Alternative Development (DAIS) in the areas most vulnerable to drug trafficking and its related crimes.

On this point, the need to promote the export of licit products from coca-growing areas to the U.S. market, as well as to seek ways to include them in the chain of industrial production and trade in that country, was highlighted.
