Turron —like the panettone— is a nostalgic product demanded by the Peruvian community whose members emigrated to various foreign countries.
Although both products are consumed during almost the entire year, the peaks of sales abroad are marked —in the case of Turron during the period from August to October; and that of Panettone between October and December.
History
The month of October is not only popular for
commemorating the Lord of Miracles, but also for high consumption of the traditional
Turron de Doña Pepa whose recipe is attributed to Josefa Marmanillo. She was a slave in the 17th century who lived in the Valley of Cañete and became popular for being a great cook.
When a strange illness paralyzed her arms, Marmanillo decided to travel to Lima to join the Lord's procession and begged him to release her from that illness —a request that was granted to the lady.
Currently,
Turron de Doña Pepa producers seek to innovate and also prepare this dessert with purple corn flour, kiwicha, fruity honeys, nuts, and other ingredients.
