Peru: Train services to Machu Picchu resume after landslide

Train services on the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route resumed on Monday afternoon after a landslide blocked the railroad earlier today, railway operator PeruRail reported.

Operations were back to normal at 2:15 PM, and six rail journeys from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu were made today, including the Hiram Bingham service.

On the other hand, other four services from Machu Picchu to Ollantaytambo were completed.

It must be noted heavy rains continue to fall in Machu Picchu district of Urubamba province (Cusco region).


According to Ferrocarril Transandino, the concessionaire of the railroad in southern Peru, the landslide occurred at Km 108 of the abovementioned track.

The incident took place at about 11:00 AM, prompted by heavy rains that fell in Machu Picchu district.

Afterward, local authorities and Ferrocarril Transandino reached the affected area to clean up the rubble.
