Peru has been chosen as a member of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Executive Board for the 2021-2024 period.

The decision was made during the 74th World Health Assembly, organized by the WHO, which took place virtually from Switzerland.

The Executive Board is composed of 34 countries elected for a three-year period. Its functions are to implement the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, as well as advise and generally to facilitate its work.

The annual Board meeting is held in January when the members agree upon the agenda for the World Health Assembly and the resolutions to be considered by the Health Assembly. Besides, a second shorter meeting takes place in May.

The Peruvian Government has pointed out that it will take the role, reaffirming its part as a trust-worthy and productive partner of the WHO, committed to strengthening multilateralism.

The addition of the South American country has taken place at a time in which the sanitary emergency response —due to the COVID-19 pandemic— must be strengthened.
