Peru will host next year's annual UN climate change negotiations or ‘COP20’ of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

"COP 20 will be latinamerican,” UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres said on her Twitter account Friday.

“Pre COP in Venezuela. COP in Peru. Thanks to both for leadership,” she tweeted from Bonn, Germany, where a 12-day round of preparatory talks were winding down on the final day.

Peru and Venezuela had both initially bid to host the meeting, officially known as the Conference of the Parties, Meeting of the Parties (COP/CMP).

The 2014 ministerial-level climate conference takes place one year before the deadline for a new, global deal on curbing global warming.

The 2013 COP is to be held in Warsaw, Poland from November 11-22.
