Peru will fulfill in advance the commitment assumed at the Convention on Cluster Munitions, signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2013, the government agency announced on Friday.

Supported by the cooperation and assistance from the Kingdom of Norway, our country will proceed to destroy its remaining cluster bombs at the Army Ammunition Center today.

As is known, Peru is a country committed to disarmament, non-proliferation and control of arms.

In this sense, cluster munitions generate indiscriminate suffering and damage, putting at serious risk the integrity, safety, and dignity of the civilian population —particularly of society's most vulnerable sectors.

The convention —which came into force for Peru on March 1, 2013— is a historic instrument for the total eradication of cluster bombs.

By becoming a State party to this convention, our country has the obligation to destroy its arsenal of cluster bombs until April 2024.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs —which signed the text of the Convention— channeled the cooperation from the Kingdom of Norway to the Defense Ministry for the task of destroying cluster munition stocks.

This support was confirmed within the framework of the III Political Consultations Meeting between Deputy Ministers held nine years ago.

The Nordic country's assistance is provided through the NGO Norwegian People's Aid (NPA), which has been working together with the Peruvian Air Force since September 2014.
