Since early in the morning pilgrims have flocked to the Sanctuary of
St. Rose of Lima in Peru's capital city to throw their letters of good wishes —mainly for health and wellness— into the traditional wishing well.
As part of COVID-19 safety protocols, visitors must bring a face mask, a vaccination certificate, and their ID card.
This time, one person per family is recommended to avoid crowds.
Saint Rose of Lima used to do penance for the sins of others. One of those penances included wrapping a chain around her waist to flagellate herself, and putting a lock on the last links, she threw the key into the aforementioned well.
It is believed that, in this place, she prayed for sinners every night.
After her death, the faithful began a tradition of writing letters to her, expressing their wishes —both spiritual and material— to be thrown into the well, waiting for her help.
Content of letters
The letters contain prayers, as well as commitments of faith and requests to help deal with illnesses, among other things.
Saint Rose of Lima is the patroness of the Americas and the Philippines, of Peru and Lima, of the Archbishopric of Lima, of the National Police of Peru, and of nurses.
