Peru takes actions to protect forests, combat deforestation

11:29 | Buenos Aires (Argentina), Jun. 19.

Environment Minister Lucia Ruiz on Wednesday asserted Peru is undertaking actions to protect forests and combat deforestation as part of four strategic pillars: institutions and governance, comprehensive territory management, sustainable production, and fight against illegal economic activities.

Speaking at a meeting on policies and investments in restoration —within the framework of "Initiative 20x20: Annual Meeting of Partners" held in Buenos Aires— the Minister explained these pillars are linked to the National Strategy on Forests and Climate Change.

The promotion of sustainable agriculture and livestock practices, the enhancement of forests, as well as the reduction of illegal and informal activities are included in such actions.

Likewise, the aim is to reduce negative impacts on economic activities, among other things.

She stressed the importance of this space for dialogue, which allows representatives of Latin America and the Caribbean to exchange experiences and learn about countries' progress in terms of ecosystem restoration and degraded lands.

"The soil loss across Latin America sometimes responds to the lack of a territory-based approach and to sectoral disarticulation during the investment execution process," she said, adding investments must be environmentally responsible without increasing degraded areas.

Moreover, Minister Ruiz outlined the current administration's actions in the fight against deforestation across the country, citing the restoration of the principle of authority in Madre de Dios region's La Pampa area, where mining and other illicit activities were taking place.
