Peru, in its capacity as member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO), voted in favor of the re-election of Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, so that he remains in office for the next five years.

The 75th World Health Assembly —set to be held in May this year— will confirm this nomination.

Prior to the voting session, the director general made a presentation in which he emphasized the lessons that the COVID-19 pandemic is leaving, which —he said— will encourage him to continue promoting the recognition, worldwide, of health as a basic human right.

Likewise, he pledged to promote the establishment and strengthening of all the necessary mechanisms so that the world is prepared to prevent and respond to future pandemics.

The participation of Peru as a new member of the WHO Executive Board occurs at a key moment for the future of the organization focused on strengthening preparedness, as well as response to health emergencies and pandemics, in the face of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Permanent Representative of Peru to International Organizations based in Geneva, Ambassador Luis Chuquihuara, affirmed that Peru's support for the candidacy of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus represents the search for a robust and efficient WHO in the face of future pandemics.

The Executive Board is made up of 34 members —elected for a period of three years.

Its main functions are to give effect to the decisions and policies established by the Assembly, advise it and facilitate its work, in general.
