Peru: State of emergency declared in Santa Teresa district after major landslide

19:54 | Santa Teresa (Cusco), Feb. 24.

The Regional Council of Cusco on Monday agreed to declare state of emergency in Santa Teresa district, located in La Convencion province, after the occurrence of a massive landslide on Sunday afternoon.

The cause of the mass movement is yet to be determined.

The agreement was announced by La Concepcion Council Heydi Hancco as part of a preliminary report that shows 300 victims, four destroyed bridges, collapsed roads, missing people, as well as the lack of energy and telephone service.

The measure is intended to facilitate the intervention and reconstruction of Santa Teresa district by the Regional Government of Cusco following an assessment by technical working sessions, and once evacuation and humanitarian assistance has been provided.

According to Hancco, the situation would require the intervention of the national government, an intergovernmental response, an array of supplies, and special attention to those most in need.
