Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna —on behalf of Peru— inked an agreement that will allow Lima to host the Ibero-American General Secretariat's (SEGIB) Sub-Regional Office for the Andean area.

The agreement was also signed by Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary General of the SEGIB.

The SEGIB is an international support organization for 22 countries making up the Ibero-American community: 19 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking nations in Latin America, as well as three (3) from the Iberian Peninsula: Spain, Portugal and Andorra.

Created in 2003, the international organization is responsible for supporting the organization of the Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, as well as implementing its mandates and driving Ibero-American Cooperation in the areas of education, social cohesion and culture.

The aforementioned office will contribute to decentralizing, facilitating and making visible SEGIB's efforts undertaken in the Inca nation and the sub-region.

It must be noted the Andean area is composed of Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela.

The signing responds to an offer made by Peru during the 24th Ibero-American Summit held in Mexico on December 8-9, 2014.

The agreement must be ratified by Congress in order to enter into force.
