Peru: Sechin River overflow floods streets of Casma

16:58 | Casma (Ancash region), Mar. 13.

The city of Casma —located in Ancash region, in east-central Peru— ended up underwater as a result of a new overflow of the Sechin River, caused by two landslides that originated from the upper part of Casma province due to heav y rains.

This overflow occurred upstream, where traffic interruption had occurred as a result of the first overflow.

The first to be affected were squatter settlements of Los Mangales, Santa Rosa, and 16 de Junio, where water quickly ran into the streets and houses.

Such was the force of the water that it reached the downtown area, flooding Casma's Main Square.

The sandbags placed by the residents at the entrance to their homes did not help much, since the force of the water swept them away and ended up flooding their homes.

Several families had to evacuate quickly and spend the night in two shelters provided by the municipality.

The National Institute for Civil Defense (Indeci) announced that it will register the affected population and assess the damages, since a number of families lost everything.
