Peru: Sayan, Huaura experience severe damage as ravines develop due to heavy rains

11:39 | Lima, Mar. 13.

Dozens of people have been affected due to the heavy rains that occurred over the weekend in the north of Lima region.

In the province of Huaura, various ravines have developed, causing rivers to overflow their banks, which alarmed the population in the district of Sayan and other localities.

The rains experienced in Sayan blocked the road that connects said district with the city of Huacho, near the town of Andahuasi.

Moreover, the families who were displaced by landslides —as their houses were destroyed and flooded by mud— requested support from local and regional authorities.

For its part, the Municipality of Sayan, under the leadership of Mayor Jesus Torres, held a special council session to approve the purchase of basic foodstuffs baskets to support the affected families.

The purchase will not exceed the amount of 8 tax units (UIT), which is equivalent to S/39,600 (US$10,473).

Likewise, municipal staff members have joined National Institute for Civil Defense (Indeci) teams to register the affected families, so that they can receive help.

Furthermore, the communication routes in the area are being cleared using machinery.
