Peru expressed concern and rejected the violent acts that occurred at the
U.S. Congress building on Wednesday after hundreds of protesters stormed the
U.S. Capitol by force.
"Peru is keeping track of the situation with concern and rejects the violent acts that occurred at the U.S. Congress building during the Electoral College confirmation vote ceremony. Absolute respect for election results is the cornerstone of democracy," the statement reads.
In addition, the Foreign Affairs Ministry noted that Peru trusts in the strength of U.S. democratic institutions, which will ensure the rule of law.
Last Wednesday, the U.S. Congress suspended an emergency session to certify Joe Biden's electoral victory, after supporters of outgoing President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol following a clash with police officers.
Four people are dead after the riots at U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday.
On Thursday, after one of the darkest days in U.S. history, the U.S. Congress ratified the results of November elections, thus confirming President-elect Joe Biden's victory.
On the other hand, outgoing President Donald Trump finally pledged to an "orderly transfer" of power.
