Peru reaffirms commitment to food security at APEC forum

12:58 | Lima, Aug. 31.

Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Andres Alencastre highlighted Peru’s commitment to further working on the implementation of sustainable food systems for food and nutritional security in favor of its population and the Asia-Pacific region.

Remarks were delivered at the 7th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Food Security Ministerial Meeting held online on August 26.

Minister Alencastre pointed out that Peru will actively participate in the Implementation Plan of the Food Security Roadmap Towards 2030.

To that end, Peru will promote coordination with other APEC economies to exchange best practices on responsible investment in the production, processing, and distribution of food that is sustainable and respectful of the environment.

Peru also reaffirmed its will to improve the quality of life of agricultural producers by coordinating actions under a territorial and multisectoral approach to industrialization, technological innovation, and water management.

It should be noted that food security is a key issue of Peru’s 2024 presidency of the APEC forum, due to its impact on the creation of conditions for post-COVID-19 economic recovery and for inclusive and sustainable growth in favor of the most vulnerable populations.
