Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski disclosed Talara refinery —operated by Peruvian State-owned oil company PetroPeru— will commence operations in 2019.

The project will not become a burden on the State, he assured, since it will be "moderately profitable."

"The project is expected to refine oil in two years. To make it [the refinery] work, the oil pipeline must be fully fixed, and we are working on that," the statesman told RPP radio and TV station

"Neighboring plants and water desalination facilities shall be finished, as well," he added.

On the other hand, Peru's top official admitted his government is concerned about the project's high cost, although the other alternative involved halting it and leaving it unfinished.

"The other option was to leave works half-finished. We chose to move on, so we added sub-plants to the refinery in order to make it fairly accepted," he stated.
