President Martin Vizcarra on Monday reminded his Uruguayan counterpart Tabare Vazquez that leaders of the Americas signed an agreement to fight corruption head-on during the
Summit of the Americas held in Lima last April.
"This topic is of utmost importance for us. As Peru's Head of State, it was my duty to communicate with Uruguay's highest authority. Yesterday, at 5:00 PM, we had a 7-8 minute long phone conversation," the statesman expressed.
Likewise, the Head of State indicated Uruguay should take into consideration the Inca country's stance on this subject.
Vizcarra affirmed a document supporting this position will be sent to Uruguay on Tuesday at the latest.
"This scourge knows no bounds," he added, and combat against it requires joint efforts of all top officials.
When asked if the Inca nation will provide a safe conduct in case Uruguay accepts Garcia's asylum request, the statesman urged people not to get ahead of the process.
The same day Garcia entered the diplomatic facilities with the purpose of requesting asylum.
As is known, Brazilian construction giant and corruption-tainted Odebrecht allegedly paid bribes to secure the Lima Metro Line 1 contract during Garcia's presidency (2006-2011).
