Peru President: Mercury Operation in La Pampa to be consolidated in 2020

13:23 | Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios region), Feb. 27.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday affirmed that 2020 will consolidate the development of Madre de Dios region's La Pampa area, where a year ago the Government launched an operation to eradicate illegal mining.

"Our presence here is not occasional; we came on behalf of the State to stay. You, as authorities, have backed the initiative, and that is why it proved successful. This year, 2020, the second year of the operation, we are going to consolidate productive projects that generate the well-being of the population," he pointed out.

His remarks were made during a ceremony that presented the environmental legacy of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games in Madre de Dios region.

According to Vizcarra, the communication with regional and local governments has been key to complete this task. "If we align three wills, we can overcome any challenge," he emphasized.

The goals set for La Pampa, where illegal mining was prevalent, are proving to be achievable, although there were sectors that did not think it would be possible.

The Head of State recalled people saying this was an ordinary operation. However, it implied not only the participation of law enforcement agents to combat illegal mining, but also a higher budget to promote licit productive activities.

From this perspective, he stressed that licit progress in the area was possible using products that can be exported to markets like Switzerland or Italy, among others.

The Peruvian leader received the environmental legacy, a recognition for promoting environmental care, for having neutralized 57.3% of the total carbon footprint generated by air travel, power consumption, among others, during the Lima 2019 Games.
