Peru President: Madre de Dios has huge potential without resorting to illegal mining

15:06 | Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios region), Feb. 27.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday said that Madre de Dios region has tremendous potential without resorting to illegal mining, and indicated the Government will continue to boost productive projects in order to create licit employment to the benefit of the population.

"We have huge potential without resorting to illegal mining, which exploits, encourages child prostitution, and undermines human rights. You have so many opportunities for development, so we are going to work together with local authorities to highlight its importance," he stated.

Addressing locals at Mazuku's main square, currently under construction,  the Head of State commented on his visit to the agricultural cooperative Tambopata, headed by a former illegal miner who now exports coffee to countries like the Netherlands and Switzerland.

"There is no better way to commemorate the first year of this campaign against illegal mining than with work, projects, health services for the population (…) support for agriculture, irrigation, and credits through Agro Peru," he pointed out.

In addition, Mr. Vizcarra affirmed that the State will continue boosting projects in the area in coordination with local authorities, such as sanitation works and the construction of a hospital in Inambari-Mazuko, for which he pledged funding.

In this respect, the statesman urged the population to commit themselves to rejecting illegal mining, taking care of the environment, and relying on the Amazon's sustainable development for themselves and for the future of their children.

"Just as we combat the illegal activity, we should also provide options for productive activities that generate formal, legal, and licit income. That's why we carry out these projects, and we will continue to do so," he expressed.
