The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Monday led a special session of the Council of Ministers to address a bill for a popular consultation on a new Political Constitution of Peru.

The session took place at the Executive Branch headquarters in Lima.

Last weekend, President Castillo announced that he will submit a bill to Congress to carry out a popular consultation so that citizens can express their opinion on the change of the Political Constitution of Peru.

"Following the constitutional course, we are going to send a bill so that in the next regional and municipal elections the people are consulted, through a ballot, whether they agree or not with a new Constitution," he said during the Decentralized Council of Ministers held in Cusco.

In this regard, Environment Minister Modesto Montoya underscored that this is not an imposition but a proposal to Parliament, so that a debate can take place and the proposal can be initially resolved there.

"President Pedro Castillo is not imposing anything; he is simply proposing an interesting debate to Congress, and legislators, who represent the people, will  make the decision," he said.
