Peru President: Holding early general elections is technically feasible

10:31 | Lima, Sep. 15.

President Martín Vizcarra has affirmed that holding early general elections by 2020 is technically feasible, as electoral bodies have indicated at Congress' Constitution Commission.

He recalled that the heads of the National Election Board (JNE), National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), and National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) appeared before the commission recently.

"The institutions responsible for carrying out the process have said so. Additionally, they are asking for opinions from constitutionalists who say there is no problem," the Head of State stated in this sense.

Likewise, the statesman welcomed the start of the reform debate at the Constitution Commission on September 3, even when it was introduced by his administration on July 29.

The President commented he hoped Congress will make a decision on the matter this month.

"This week, progress is being made with the debate, and we are confident that this issue will have been overcome in September," he insisted.

Remarks were made after participating in the second conference on defense and disaster risk management in the Southern Macrorregion.
