Peru President: Government willing to work with Congress

20:03 | Tumbes (Tumbes region), May. 21.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday affirmed his administration looks forward to working with Congress on the political reform.

"We do want to work with Congress on the reform, but without tricks, speaking clearly, and working together for the well-being of the entire nation," the Head of State said.

Likewise, the top official said the country can be changed, provided that everyone is willing to do so.

However, 30 days went by and no progress was made, so the statesman convened a meeting with spokespersons of Congress' political parties to discuss the political reform.

"But less than 24 hours later on the following day, the Constitution Commission assessed the first bill and shelved it. It is an extremely important bill that seeks to correct immunity that has become impunity, not even the population agrees with that," he added.

Nevertheless, President Vizcarra reaffirmed the Executive Branch's willingness to seek approval of this reform, which is necessary to improve politics' quality and consolidate democracy.

"I am sure we will achieve it, because that's what citizens demand," the Head of State concluded.

Remarks were made in Tumbes during the signing ceremony of a natural gas concession contract.
