The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Thursday expressed his heartfelt condolences to the relatives of those who died during the demonstrations that have taken place in recent days in Peru.

Remarks were made during the 4th Decentralized Council of Ministers held in the central Andean city of Huancayo, in Junin region.

"We will lay down the foundations for the right to free demonstration and protest in Peru," he said.

At the meeting, the Head of State emphasized that protest and demonstration organizers must never be prosecuted.

"For instance, some groups are protesting today, such the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP) and teachers; protest and demonstration organizers can use the streets and public squares to demonstrate because that is what democracy is all about," he remarked.

Moreover, Mr. Castillo congratulated the protesters who took to the streets. "As they have always done with me, defending water, life, and education," he said.

However, he underlined that demonstrations must be conducted in the best way, without violence.

The top dignitary reiterated his sincere apologies "to the Huanca people and to Peruvians in case any of his statements have been misunderstood at any time."

The 4th Decentralized Council of Ministers aimed to address the territorial development agenda in Junin region.

The decentralized session took place at Wanka Coliseum in Huancayo.
