Peru: President Castillo announces direct support measures for rural farmers

16:34 | Sacsayhuaman (Cusco region), Oct. 3.

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Sunday announced the establishment of an agrarian development cabinet and a series of direct support actions for family farmers —measures that are part of the Second Agrarian Reform launched today by his Government.

The Head of State pointed out that the Second Agrarian Reform encompasses five areas of work, and its implementation —he said— is not intended to expropriate lands or affect the property rights of anybody.

"We are considering changing the way of governing so that our State can be at the service of family farmers, who have been set aside for decades, government after government, but that ends today," he stated.

The first measure to be adopted —within the framework of the Second Agrarian Reform— is the establishment of a rural and agrarian development cabinet, which he will head and will be made up of productive ministries of infrastructure and social development, including the participation of representatives of regional and local governments.

According to the Peruvian leader, said cabinet will design and promote policies for rural and agrarian development in the country.

Secondly, the top official announced a series of direct and immediate support measures for farmers, who are going through a severe crisis due to the pandemic and the increase in the cost of production inputs.

The President noted that, despite the productive diversity and capacity, these years of absence have turned the country into a nation heavily dependent on the import of agricultural foods and inputs, which —he said— must be stopped.

Mr. Castillo's remarks were delivered within the framework of the launch of the Second Agrarian Reform at the Sanctuary of Sacsayhuaman in Cusco.
