Peru President bids farewell to scientific team before departure for Antarctica

10:54 | Lima, Dec. 11.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Wednesday participated in the departure ceremony of the oceanographic research vessel BAP Carrasco to Antarctica.

The event also marked the beginning of the 27th scientific expedition to the Antarctica.

The Head of State noted that the ship's departure is a source of pride for Peruvians, and the research shows the level of technology available in the South American country.

Moreover, he said, the expedition is important because it will determine what actions need to be taken to fight climate change, based on the collected data.

The responsibility for acting on climate change lies with the entire Peruvian State —represented by its different scientific institutions, which are aboard the BAP Carrasco.

Such vessel, he remarked, constitutes a real floating laboratory —equipped with technology— that will make valuable information available to scientists in Peru and around the world.

According to the Peruvian leader, the expedition's success will result in the success of the country and science in having better living conditions for everyone.

The activity took place at Callao Naval Base.
