The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte has awarded the Citizen's Merit Medal to ecclesiastical representatives of the Diocese of Huari, located in the Andean region of Ancash.

Likewise, the Head of State paid tribute to the work promoted by Father Ugo de Censi, who has lifted part of the population in said area out of poverty.

The award was rendered in favor of the aforementioned diocese, represented by its Vicar General Walter Flores and its Auxiliary Bishop, Monsignor Giorgio Barbetta.

In their speeches, both Barbetta and President Boluarte highlighted the role that the late Salesian priest, Ugo de Censi, played in that part of the country —mainly in the town of Chacas— in favor of the most disadvantaged population.

In her address, the top official pointed out that the aforementioned representative of the Catholic Church left a mark through his speeches, schools, and artistic training workshops.

Remarkable work

Mrs. Boluarte stated that De Censi and his followers developed "the largest process of social inclusion that Peru has ever experienced, without State intervention."

This has been achieved by raising the standard of living in the local farming population, through an increase in the productivity of potatoes and the production of dairy products.

In this regard, the dignitary pledged to visit Chacas soon in order to confirm this social phenomenon in situ.

The top official also affirmed that she will visit the shelters in the Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range), which provide accommodation to visitors and athletes.
