Peru: Police capture participant in Tarata Street terrorist attack

The Peruvian National Police on Saturday reported having captured one suspect responsible for the terrorist attack carried out on Tarata Street in Lima's Miraflores district back in 1992.

The suspect is Flumencio Jayo Diaz, also known as "Comrade Jorge," who was arrested in Ayacucho region.

His capture was carried out by agents of the National Police's Directorate against Terrorism (Dircote), it was reported.

The Shining Path attack on Tarata street —a residential area in Miraflores district— took place on July 16, 1992.

An automobile full of explosives was detonated by members of the aforementioned terrorist group.

The attack triggered the death of 25 people, in addition to leaving 250 injured and major material damage.


Jayo's criminal record

In this context, the recently-captured Jayo participated in the preparation of said attack, following instructions from Martha Huatay, also known as "Comrade Rosa," one ringleader of 
Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path terrorist organization).

An arrest warrant and pre-trial detention for nine months had been issued for him by the Judiciary.
