The National Police of Peru (PNP) and the Armed Forces guarantee security during the 2021 General Elections, which will take place on April 11, Interior Minister Jose Elice affirmed on Thursday.

"In order to guarantee security during the electoral process on Sunday, April 11, the National Police will deploy around 96,000 members nationwide," he told reporters during a press conference.

The dignitary pointed out that the entire force will be available —except for those whose health has been hit by COVID-19— to also develop additional functions at police stations and specialized units in matters of public order and security.

Elice also said that the PNP will rely on the support of the Armed Forces, which will have as main responsibility to maintain internal order at polling stations, while the police will do so outside.

"In some places, these roles will be exchanged and in others, only the police will be in charge of both fronts. The truth is that the National Police and the Armed Forces, together, guarantee security on this day, guarantee tranquility so that people can freely and peacefully exercise their right to vote or their right to political participation and suffrage," he expressed.
