Peru PM: Quarantine extension maintains restrictions

The recent extension of the quarantine until April 26 —aimed to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19)— maintains the particularities of the restrictions taken by the Government of Peru, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed on Thursday.

The high-ranking official indicated that the extension of any measure is due to the health circumstances that the country faces.

"What is manifested as an agreement of the Council of Ministers is that the extension of the mandatory immobilization for 15 more days occurs under those circumstances; it is an extension, the details given to date remain in place," he expressed.

The Prime Minister recalled that —in order to face the COVID-19— the Government decreed social distancing for 15 days, then mandatory immobilization was established from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and —subsequently— transit on alternate days for men and women, as well as total immobilization on Sundays, were decided.

According to Zeballos, all these measures were taken at different times and served to respond to the pandemic.

In response to a question asked by Andina news agency —via Radio Nacional— Zeballos said that the extension of the quarantine with its restrictions does not rule out that a change may occur later.

Measures in regions

The Prime Minister also specified that a possible extension of the mandatory immobilization hours in some regions —which register high number of contagion cases— will respond to the needs of their circumstances.

For example, he commented that the Governor of rainforest Ucayali Region requested that social immobilization be extended from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. as is the case in Loreto, Tumbes, Piura, La Libertad, and Lambayeque.
