Peru PM: Gov't committed to genuine decentralization process

08:00 | Lima, Feb. 21.

Peru's Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed that the Government is committed to developing a genuine decentralization process in the country.

"We are here to reiterate the Government's commitment to engaging in a genuine decentralization process, forging development and sustainability, based on the demands coming from the interior of the country," he said in a meeting with Putumayo authorities in Loreto region.

Zeballos remarked that the geographical distance to Putumayo —located in the border area of the northern Peruvian rainforest— can be considerable, but this cannot be a hindrance for us —authorities on behalf of that State— to be here.

"This is a way to strengthen democracy, as well as to maintain a direct and personal dialogue with authorities and citizens," he noted.

According to the Cabinet chief, border regions require urgent attention. "An effective presence of the State must be guaranteed in order to have a living border," he emphasized.

In this sense, he said an agenda is being prepared with the help of the regional government and local authorities. The aim is to "build a country from the interior to the capital."

Zeballos remarked that the Thursday meeting provided a platform for constructive dialogue, which allows defining the priority of investment projects and strategies, as well as assigning roles and responsibilities to each level of government.
