Peru PM: Government's goal is to reduce poverty to 18.6% by 2021

Peruvian Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos reaffirmed the Executive Branch's commitment to reducing the poverty rate by 2 percentage points for the Inca country's Independence Bicentennial in 2021.

"The Bicentennial has to find a country based on equity and opportunities for all, and the way out of poverty is a realistic, necessary, but —above all— a motivating perspective. I have come to invigorate that commitment (…)," Zeballos emphasized.

Likewise, the high-ranking government official stressed that these efforts will not be enough unless there are allies —such as local authorities, private companies and citizens— as there are still deep gaps that must be closed in order to achieve the comprehensive development of all Peruvians.

"The reality shows us, in the hardness of the figures, that 20.5% of Peruvians are in poverty situation, and the expectation by 2021 is to reduce it by 2 (percentage) points, and reducing it by 2 points means sticking to 18.6%, but we still have to continue working," he said.

Subsequently, the Council of Ministers head —along with Ministers Jorge Melendez (Development and Social Inclusion) and Fabiola Muñoz (Environment)— toured the event's Bicentennial Pavilion, within the framework of the III Congress of Protected Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean, which displayed information about the Inca country's protected areas.

Remarks were made while closing the VIII Social Inclusion Week that served to share and recognize the good practices to overcome poverty.

The VIII Social Inclusion Week was focused on the Strategy for the Permanent Exit from Poverty, an initiative composed of public interventions articulated at intersectoral and intergovernmental levels, which seeks to improve the capacities of households in poverty situation and economic vulnerability in order to generate autonomous and sustainable incomes.
