Peru: PM announces new COVID-19 prevalence study

Peruvian Prime Minister Walter Martos announced that a new seroprevalence study will be conducted to determine the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 in the South American country.

In remarks to Andina news agency, the Cabinet chief said it is necessary to learn about the coronavirus contagion level before the partial start of the Economic Reactivation's Phase 4, which is scheduled for October.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official recalled that —in July— a seroprevalence study had revealed that 25% of the population of Lima and Callao would be infected with COVID-19. He projected that said percentage would have increased from 30% to 35%.

Martos indicated that —as in European countries— a second coronavirus wave could occur in Peru, which is why it is extremely important to resume economic activities in a very progressive, gradual, and responsible manner.

In these sense, he stressed that the Government is always trying to balance the economic factor and citizens' health.

"Undoubtedly, the factor that has the greatest weight is protecting people's health and lives, but we also have to find a balance during the economic reactivation. Otherwise, we will not have the necessary resources to continue fighting the pandemic," he concluded.
