Peru plans to lift wage floor for teachers as of 2019

10:52 | Lima, Aug. 16.

Peruvian Government is planning to raise the wage floor for teachers to S/2,200 (around US$664) starting next year, President Martin Vizcarra announced, noting educators' pay increase should be at least 10%.

His remarks were made while granting the "Magisterial Palms" to 12 educators for their contribution to the Peruvian education system.

According to the Head of State, teachers are one of the key factors in teaching. So, they should receive an adequate salary in addition to quality training.

"The current wage floor for teachers is S/2,000 (about US$603), and I think it will be at least S/2,200 (around US$664) next year. Plus, our commitment is to raise it in 2019, 2020, and 2021 (…)," he commented.

"We are considering the (education) minister's proposal to set a wage rise of at least 10% in the 2019 budget," Vizcarra added.

Peru's top official affirmed the budget for the upcoming three years is the responsibility of his Government. Therefore, teachers' pay raises will be gradually included over this period, he said.

Moreover, the statesman announced his administration will make an effort to settle the social debt owed to educators, which —he said— is a repeated demand he receives from teachers all over the country.

Joined by Education Minister Daniel Alfaro, the dignitary explained the 2019 budget will include S/200 million (US$60.3 million) to pay such debt.
