Peru: Pisco gaining ground in major Chinese cities

14:30 | Beijing (China), Jul. 11.

The Peruvian Embassy in China went on a promotional tour to Beijing, Shanghai, Macao, and Zhuhai to increase the demand and consumption of Peru's signature drink, Pisco.

The initiative consisted of a tasting —guided by Peruvian sommelier Lucero Villagarcia— in the presence of local hotel, bar, and restaurant representatives, to determine the quality of the drink.

"The activities are the result of Foreign Affairs Ministry's and embassies' efforts to promote Pisco. This opens up the possibility to increase its demand," Peruvian Ambassador to China Luis Quesada told Andina news agency.

The response in China has been quite positive and confirms the need to further promote Peru's flagship drink in the Asian giant, both in its pure form and in cocktails like Pisco Sour, Capitan, or Chilcano.

"Its flavor is undeniable, both in its pure form and in cocktails. It can be served as an aperitif or digestive. Besides, there is history behind this drink, which dates back to the 16th century," he stated.

For her part, Villagarcia affirmed the tasting sessions will be extremely beneficial for Pisco demand in China, since the attendees expressed interest in exploring what Peru has to offer.

During the events, the expert explained that Pisco is a denomination of origin spirit created more than 400 years ago, whose production is concentrated in Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna regions.

"We have reached China with eight varieties of Pisco grapes, including Mollar, Criolla, Uvina, Italia, and Muscat. Participants have learned to enjoy Pisco and prepare Pisco-based cocktails," she commented.

Tasting is an important way to promote Pisco, considering Chinese are open to trying out new products.
