Peru: Permanent Commission ratifies designation of Velarde as BCR head

The Permanent Commission of Congress on Friday ratified the appointment of economist Julio Velarde Flores as Governor of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).

The ratification —decided by 18 votes in favor, 3 against, and 6 abstentions— came following the communication submitted by the Executive Branch to Parliament regarding this designation.

Said communication was made effective through an official letter, which was read by Congress Chairwoman Maria del Carmen Alva during the Permanent Commission session this afternoon.

The document gave an account of the appointment of Velarde —established by Supreme Resolution No. 148-2021-PCM and published in the Official Gazette El Peruano on October 8.

It was signed by the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, and Prime Minister Mirtha Vasquez.

As is known, Julio Velarde has been serving as BCR Governor since 2006.
