Peru participated in the 20th Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which took place from April 19 to 30.

The event was held in a hybrid format, including in-person sessions in New York, as well as virtual meetings.

The Peruvian delegation was headed by Deputy Interculturality Minister Angela Acevedo.

Acevedo took part in a debate over the future work of the Permanent Forum, which included new issues such as challenges related to pandemics and responses to them.

During her participation, she explained in detail the Peruvian State's response to assist and protect indigenous peoples in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In this regard, she highlighted the creation of an information system in indigenous languages and with cultural relevance, the assistance to remote areas —through intercultural consultants and itinerant platforms— and the coordination with indigenous organizations.

Likewise, she specified the actions taken to guarantee food security through the provision of staple foods, as well as to protect indigenous peoples in a situation of isolation and initial contact.

The Peruvian delegation also participated in the panel on International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032).

In this regard, Peru reported on the approval of the Ethnolinguistic Map, which will adapt public services to be provided in the predominant language of inhabitants, the training of 455 interpreters and translators of 37 indigenous languages, as well as the creation of the Central Office for Interpretation and Translation in Indigenous Languages (CIT) to provide in-person and remote interpretation services.
