Peru participates at COP15 to combat desertification

12:14 | Abidjan (Ivory Coast), May. 18.

Peru shares its challenges and opportunities in the face of desertification and drought, within the framework of the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15), which takes place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Under the theme "Land. Life. Legacy: From scarcity to prosperity," COP15 seeks to call for action to adopt effective measures in the face of the rapid degradation of natural areas across the planet.

The involvement of the private sector in ecosystem restoration and protection projects in Peru, as well as technical assistance for the development of actions and policies within the framework of the "Drought Initiative," are some of the issues promoted by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

This comes within the framework of the fifteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP15), which takes place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

Said global meeting, in which Peru is taking part through the Ministry of Environment (Minam), will also discuss how to implement more effectively the voluntary measures of Land Degradation Neutrality.

In Peru, said measures are expected not to increase or decrease the proportion of degraded land through sustainable practices by 2030.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Convention, Ibrahim Thiaw, the aim of this global summit is to address the challenges of land degradation and drought.

In this regard, Director of Adaptation to Climate Change and Desertification at the Ministry of Environment (Minam) Cristina Rodriguez, who has been participating in the summit, stated "desertification is the result of soil degradation, overexploitation, and inappropriate use of the land, which is exacerbated as a result of climate change."
