Peru: Over US$573,000 destined to improve capacities, mitigate climate change at 3 EPSs

18:00 | Lima, Jan. 24.

Peru's Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation (MVCS) —through the Directorate General of Environmental Affairs— has been developing actions to promote energy efficiency at Sanitation Service Providers (EPSs) across the South American country, which contribute to the protection of the environment, climate, and natural resources.

These actions are supported by the German Development Cooperation —implemented by GIZ— thus allowing service operators to reduce costs in their commitment to efficient management of wastewater.

Consequently, in 2014, an Aide-Memoire was signed by MVCS, GIZ, and the International Water Association, with a non-refundable financing of €660,000 (about US$727,748) for the 2014-2018 period.

To continue this program, Deputy Construction and Sanitation Minister Julio Kosaka and the responsible for the project known as WaCCliM Peru (GIZ) Ingmar Obermann signed on Thursday the Aide-Memoire extension of the Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) Project.

The aim is to improve sustainability of EPSs by making them leaders within a low-carbon climate-resilient society, through the planning and implementation of mitigation measures that offer adaptation co-benefits in the face of climate risks.

The EPS involved in this project expansion is SedaCusco, as pilot utility at local level. Besides, EPS Grau and Seda Ayacucho will be supported. The non-refundable financing amounts to €520,000 (about US$573,386), which will be managed by the WaCCliM/GIZ Project for the 2019-2022 period.

EPS SedaCusco and EPS Grau are expected to incorporate mitigation measures into their operations, considering the adaptation benefits.

With the project's support, EPSs have developed capacities to reduce greenhouse gases, which will induce a better planning of the provision of services in a context of climate change.
