Peru: Over 1,000-year-old archaeological remains found in Callao

14:00 | Callao (Callao region), Nov. 11.

Over 1,000-year-old archaeological remains were found while carrying out installation works on the natural gas network in Callao. They are two funerary contexts, apparently from Lima Culture.

A couple of weeks after the discovery of a funerary context under a track a few meters from La Victoria district's Main Square, a similar event takes place again, this time in Las Brisas de Oquendo, in Callao.

As in the previous case —in which ceramics and human remains were found during expansion works along the gas network— the scene was repeated in the Constitutional Province of Callao.

Archaeologists from the natural gas company Calidda found two funerary contexts including ceramic vessels.

Lima Culture

A curious fact about this archaeological find is that the bodies were placed in extended position and face down. Based on the burial pattern, it is believed to belong to the Lima culture.

The Lima Culture was present in the valleys of Ancon, Chillon, Rimac, and Lurin, between 200 and 900 A.D.

Thanks to desktop studies undertaken by the specialists, they have found that there are various archaeological mounds under the Oquendo area.

However, they are no longer noticed by Callao residents due to urban growth in the area.
