Civil society organizations supported the lawsuit filed by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) against Repsol.

Said organizations consider that there is carelessness in speeding up environmental remediation processes in the sea off Ventanilla.

They also emphasized the company's little intention to compensate all the affected people.

Precisely, this week Indecopi must support such lawsuit before the Superior Court of Justice of Lima.

Said lawsuit seeks a compensation of US$3 billion for non-contractual damages and another compensation of US$1.5 billion for social, moral, and collective damage.

The lawsuit was filed on June 13 before the Superior Court of Justice of Lima against Repsol (the parent company), La Pampilla Refinery (the subsidiary company), the insurance company Mapfre, and the owners of the vessel that transported the fuel.

Thus, an important historical precedent has been set, bearing in mind that this is the first time Peru —through Indecopi— sues a transnational company (Repsol).

The Institute for Legal Defense of the Environment and Sustainable Development (IDLADS) joined the process as a third party or optional codefendant.

Oil spill

The ecological disaster, which occurred on January 15 this year, was caused by the spill of 11,900 barrels of crude oil at La Pampilla maritime terminal, which is operated by the Spanish company Repsol.
