Peru: OEFA monitors oil leak in Piura's Lobitos district

09:58 | Lobitos (Piura region), Feb. 9.

The Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) —attached to the Ministry of Environment— has started supervisory action in response to the oil leak that occurred on Block VII/VI operated by the company Sapet Development Peru Inc. in the district of Lobitos, in Talara province (Piura region).

During the activity, Peru's environmental agency confirmed that the oil leak has been controlled.

The supervisory activities undertaken by OEFA will help determine the causes of the environmental emergency, the responsibility for the events, and the impact that it has generated.

Moreover, OEFA will verify the implementation of initial response actions by the company.

Sapet Development Peru Inc. is a branch of the China National Petroleum Corporation —China's largest oil producer and supplier, as well as one of the major suppliers of oilfield services in the world.

The environmental inspection authority will issue a report —on the results of the actions taken— in a timely fashion.
