Peru: OAS recognizes Culture Ministry's COVID-19 strategy for indigenous peoples

13:24 | Lima, Jan. 17.

Peru's Ministry of Culture has been recognized by the Organization of American States (OAS) for the implementation of the Alerting, Tracking, and Monitoring Strategy in COVID-19 suspected cases involving indigenous and native peoples in Peru.

The recognition comes within the framework of the Virtual Contest and Fair: Good Practices for Groups in Situations of Vulnerability in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic, organized by the Department of Social Inclusion (DIS) of the Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity (SARE).

The Ministry of Culture became the winner in the "Indigenous Peoples" category with the proposal "Information and Early Warning Service in Indigenous Languages for the Prevention and Mitigation of COVID-19 in Indigenous or Native Peoples of Peru."

The Culture Ministry's nomination in this category seeks to showcase and share existing good practices to respond to and address groups in situations of vulnerability in the context of COVID-19 in OAS member states.

Peru defeated more than 10 member states including Argentina, Brazil, the United States, and Mexico, among others.

Peruvian Interculturality Deputy Minister Angela Acevedo affirmed that OAS’ recognition encourages the Ministry of Culture to continue working for the benefit of indigenous or native peoples in this difficult situation due to COVID-19, always hand-in-hand with intercultural facilitators.

About the contest

COVID-19 has radically changed everyone's lives and is making the inequality gaps that existed before the pandemic even more visible. As has been documented, the health emergency is having a disproportionate impact on groups in situations of vulnerability in the region.

In this context, the Department of Social Inclusion of the OAS' Secretariat for Access to Rights and Equity (DIS) prepared the Practical Guide to Inclusive and Rights-Based Responses to COVID-19 in the Americas, with the objective of highlighting and giving specific recommendations on addressing groups in situations of vulnerability during the pandemic.

Furthermore, DIS has been organizing a series of virtual meetings to promote the exchange of information and good practices, as well as recommendations that may provide member States with guidelines for the creation of public policies.

Given the need to continue serving the groups most affected by the impacts of the pandemic and to support member States, DIS has organized the Virtual Contest and Fair of Good Practices for Groups in Situations of Vulnerability in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
