Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa on Wednesday affirmed that the 52nd General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) conveys the consensus among representatives from across the Americas regarding the fight against discrimination and inequality.

Such consensus —he said— was reached within the context of the coronavirus pandemic and the war between other countries, which impact societies —mainly the most vulnerable ones— in terms of public health, nutrition, and food.

"We welcome the presence of more than 24 foreign affairs ministers and observers, who meet today under the leadership of Luis Almagro (the OAS Secretary General), a friend of democracy and the fight against inequality," Landa stated.

When asked about equality in Peru, the high-ranking official described it as a value and a principle of the rule of law, as well as an issue to be overcome, considering that some burdens such as discrimination have historically persisted.

This discrimination —he said— occurs directly as well as indirectly, making —for example— indigenous groups, women, people with disabilities, minors, and LGBTI groups invisible.

According to the minister, inequality is being addressed through recognition policies —a task framed within the commitments made by Peru for its accession to the OECD.

Remarks were made at a press conference in Lima, along with OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and Peru's Permanent Representative to the OAS Harold Forsyth.
