Statement of the OAS General Secretariat on the political situation in Peru

The General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) confirms that, in response to the invitation issued by the National Jury of Elections of the Republic of Peru to the OAS on October 7th for the deployment of an Electoral Observation Mission, the Mission will be deployed in due time and manner.

The Mission will be led by economist and diplomat Rubén Darío Ramírez Lezcano, a former Foreign Minister of the Republic of Paraguay.

The Mission will be composed of electoral experts and observers from several nationalities who, considering the context of the pandemic, will perform their duties under a presential and virtual scheme and with the necessary advance considering the date for the general elections, set by the government of Peru for April 11, 2021.

In order to do so, the Chief of Mission and his team will analyze all aspects related to an electoral process, such as organization, logistics, electoral technology, electoral justice and spaces for dialogue with all electoral actors, both institutional actors and from participating political parties.

The OAS General Secretariat fully trusts the disposition of the new Executive Branch –in particular- and the traditional strength that the institutions in the Republic Peru –in general- will contribute to the Mission fulfilling its mandates.
