Peru: Non-traditional exports in August recover after 5 months of decline

The volume of non-traditional exports showed a slight recovery of 0.3% in August this year, compared to the same month in 2019, driven by agriculture (13.9%) and fishing (7.5%) sectors, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) reported on Monday.

According to INEI's Technical Report on Evolution of Exports and Imports, among the products most demanded were blueberries (52.5%); avocados (49%); tangerines (66.2%); fresh or chilled asparagus (7.3%); as well as frozen cuttlefish, squid, and giant squid (33.7%); squid and cuttlefish (51.1%); and shrimp tails with shell (27.5%).

On the other hand, decreases were registered in textile (-16.3%), chemical (-10.2%), metal-mechanical (-20.9%), and non-metallic mining (-19.8%) sectors.

In this case, there were declines in shipments of cotton polo shirts (-16.6%); knitted polo shirts and T-shirts made of other textile materials (-15.9%); cotton sweaters (-11.1%); as well as zinc oxide (-7.4%); plates, sheets, and strips of ethylene polymers (-10.7%); and sulfuric acid (-58.5%), among others.

Traditional exports

On the other hand, INEI stated that the volume of traditional exports fell 43.4%, compared to the same month last year.

The sectors with the largest declines were mining (-49.4%), agriculture (-12.7%), as well as oil and natural gas (-65.9%).

On the contrary, shipments in the fishing sector witnessed an increase of 247.6%.
