Chan Chan archaeological site in Peru's northern La Libertad region welcomed 3,589 visitors on August's first Sunday, thanks to the Open Museum program run by Culture Ministry.
The announcement was made by Maria Elena Cordova, head of La Libertad's Decentralized Directorate of Culture, who said the number of visits on said day was 50% higher than on July's first Sunday, and about 80% more compared to June.
The complex was flocked by adults, senior citizens, as well as school and university students.
They explored the Nik An (formerly Tschudi Palace) walled complex,
Chan Chan Site Museum, and Huaca Arco Iris.
Ancient recipes
A food tasting session was held on this occasion, including dishes based on mococho, a very nourishing seaweed —popular in Trujillo's gastronomy— that grows off the coast of Huanchaco beach.
Likewise, visitors sampled traditional sweets and chicha de jora —a fermented corn drink— made by the institution staff.
"We want to share these ancient recipes —to the delight of visitors— as they have passed from generation to generation and are used by Huanchaco's artisan fishermen when going out for their daily catch in caballitos de totora (traditional reed watercraft)," Cordova pointed out.
