Peru: National Police guarantees safety of Alejandro Toledo

The Peruvian National Police, present at the headquarters of the Police Aviation Directorate (Diravpol), guaranteed the safety of former President Alejandro Toledo, who arrived in arrived in Peru this morning.

On social media, the institution reported that Commander General of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Jorge Luis Angulo and senior police officers were present at said facilities.

The ex-president is in Peru after having been extradited from the United States.

"Present at Diravpol facilities, PNP Commander General Jorge Luis Angulo Tejada, together with senior police officers, guarantee the safety of former President Alejandro Toledo Manrique as part of his extradition process," the PNP reported.

In addition, the head of INTERPOL-Lima Carlos Lopez and INTERPOL agents who escorted Toledo from the United States were present at the Diravpol headquarters, too.

Toledo arrived Sunday at 7:02 a.m. on a commercial flight from Los Angeles, where he made a stopover when traveling from San Francisco Airport.

Immigration check

For its part, Peru's National Superintendence of Migrations reported that it conducted the immigration check of the ex-president upon his arrival from the United States.

"The immigration check was carried out at the Police Aviation Directorate, after the former president arrived on a commercial flight from Los Angeles," the entity said via Twitter.

Alejandro Toledo arrived in Peru this morning. He was extradited from the United States to be brought before the Peruvian justice system for the prosecution of corruption cases that he was accused of regarding the concession for the construction of the South Interoceanic Highway.



Alejandro Toledo —who resided in the U.S.— is being investigated by the Peruvian justice for having allegedly received a bribe worth US$35 million from Brazilian construction companies to favor them in the bidding for the South Interoceanic Highway, while he was President of the Republic (2001-2006).
